The Mokpo Namhang Urban Wetland is a nationally important wetland, supporting an excellent diversity of bird species throughout the year (see the available counting data). Birds Korea is therefore very pleased to congratulate Mokpo City on their positive decision in (March, 2010) to construct a birdwatching hide overlooking the site. Completed in June, the birdwatching hide is located on the corner of P1 and P2 as advised in the Mokpo Urban Wetland Park Plan which Birds Korea submitted to Mokpo City on November 24 2009.
Birds Korea again would like to congratulate Mokpo City on taking this major and very positive step in recognising the importance of this wetland to birds and to Mokpo citizens.
Despite this very positive progress, much of the Mokpo Namhang Urban Wetland is still threatened by infilling and construction. Birds Korea will of course continue to work for the conservation of this site. We remain committed to the belief that with appropriate design and management this wetland could indeed become the nation's first wildlife-rich urban wetland park; and the nation's first urban Ramsar site.
