Details of a day trip to Ganghwa Island, July 27 2002

Having arrived at Ganghwa bus terminal, I boarded a bus to Chondungsa, where I disembarked and walked in a large loop around the southeastern part of the island. This hike took about 6.5 hours.

Conditions were clear, sunny, and hot, which generated a lot of haze over the tidal flats, making identification of distant shorebirds difficult, and resulted in a very uncomfortable sunburn. Conditions over the ponds and ricefields were ideal, however, and the following species (and numbers) were recorded:

  2. Spot-billed Duck Anas poecilorhyncha (many)

  3. Common Teal Anas crecca crecca (2)

  4. Pelagic Cormorant Phalacrocorax pelagicus (2 juv.)

  5. Little Egret Egretta garzetta (70+)

  6. Chinese Egret Egretta eulophotes (4)

  7. Pacific Reef Egret Egretta sacra (1 dp flying roughly NE)

  8. Grey Heron Ardea cinerea (approx. 40)

  9. Great Egret Egretta alba (60+)

  10. Intermediate Egret Egretta intermedia (approx. 30)

  11. Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis (40+)

  12. Chinese Pond Heron Ardeola bacchus (1)

  13. Striated Heron Butoroides striatus (5)

  14. Black-crowned Night-heron Nycticorax nycticorax (50+)

  15. Yellow Bittern Ixobrychus sinesnsis (1)

  32. Yellow-legged (Mongolian) Gull Larus cachinnans mongolicus (2) (sic)(WBKEnglish prefers to consider Mongolian Gull a full species, and it is referred to as so throughout the rest of the site.)
